Quantum Optimal Control for Mitigating Bit-Flip, Phase-Flip, and Depolarizing Noise in Quantum Systems

1. Introduction
Quantum computers are highly susceptible to noise, with bit-flip, phase-flip, and depolarizing errors arising from imperfections in the classical control pulses used to manage qubits. While Quantum Error Correction (QEC) can fix these errors after they occur, this study proposes Quantum Optimal Control (QOC) as a proactive strategy to prevent them at the hardware level, thereby strengthening quantum processes from the very beginning.

2. Why is it Historic
This research marks a historic milestone as it demonstrates, for the first time from Pakistan’s CETQAP, a GRAPE-like Quantum Optimal Control algorithm implemented on IBM’s ibm_torino backend. By optimizing gate pulses to mitigate multi-channel noise, it bridges the gap between Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) devices and the path to fault-tolerant quantum computing. It contributes not just to theory but to practical execution on real hardware, validating that tailored control pulses can achieve error suppression without extra qubits.

3. Results
The optimized X-gate pulse achieved a fidelity of 1.0000 after 100 iterations, matching the theoretical ideal. Hardware runs and simulator tests confirmed robustness, with reduced error probabilities in noisy environments. Bloch sphere visualizations showed identical state evolution, while histograms highlighted stronger resistance against errors. The optimized pulse waveform displayed smooth amplitude variations, peaking between 10 and 15 units, effectively reducing noise amplification.

4. Who Can Use It
This work benefits quantum researchers, hardware engineers, and algorithm developers aiming to reduce reliance on heavy QEC overhead while enhancing gate reliability. It serves the global scientific community working on scaling NISQ devices toward fault-tolerant architectures, and opens opportunities in fields like cryptography, optimization, and secure communication.

5. Who Did It Surpass
This achievement surpasses existing studies in Quantum Optimal Control that were limited mostly to simulation or theoretical proposals. Unlike prior work which rarely demonstrated robustness on real hardware, this research validated QOC directly on IBM’s ibm_torino backend, achieving perfect fidelity under realistic multi-channel noise models. By doing so, it moves beyond purely academic demonstrations and establishes a new benchmark for hardware-level noise mitigation.
